2-Alarm fire in Hawthorn Woods, 5-20-17

On Saturday night, May 20, 2017, the Countryside Fire Protection District (FPD) received a call about a basement fire with explosions at 4 Keuka Court in Hawthorn Woods. The homeowner reported that model cars with batteries were stored in the basement, which may have caused the explosive sounds. A thick layer of fog covered the area, and firefighters arrived to find light-colored smoke escaping from the house. The fire was initially classified as a working fire but was quickly upgraded to a Full Still, followed by a Box Alarm for change-of-quarters companies only. Interior crews struggled to locate the fire's origin in the basement, and due to the need for a more substantial water supply, the alarm was further escalated to a Box Alarm for tenders. This incident occurred during the early stages of a separate 2-alarm fire being tackled by the Wauconda FPD in an adjacent district. As a result, several units responding to the Countryside fire were already committed to the Wauconda scene, forcing the use of backup companies from the next levels on the box card. As the fire intensified and began affecting part of the first floor, all crews were evacuated, and the strategy shifted to a defensive attack. About 35 minutes into the incident, the alarm was upgraded to a 2nd Alarm. Shortly after, the fire was contained, allowing firefighters to re-enter the home to extinguish any remaining hot spots. The simultaneous occurrence of multiple extra-alarm fires led to extended response times for the Hawthorn Woods fire, with units arriving from Northbrook, Antioch, Newport Township, North Chicago, Hoffman Estates, Prospect Heights, Zion, Fox River Grove, and even the Great Lakes Naval Training Center. An unofficial count suggested there were eight tenders on scene. Photos from the event capture the intensity of the fire, including firefighters preparing to enter the house amid heavy smoke, engines battling the blaze from the outside, and equipment such as thermal imaging cameras and portable water tanks being used.
