The Broadview Fire Department held a live fire training session on Thursday at the intersection of Filmore and 17th Street. The exercise involved setting controlled room fires in an empty house, which quickly escalated into a fully involved structure after several hours of intense training. Firefighters from the department worked closely with other MABAS Division 20 units, making it a collaborative and comprehensive drill.
Tim Olk was present throughout the event and captured several high-quality images showcasing the firefighters in action, the emergency apparatus, and the intense flames. His photos provide a rare glimpse into the realities of live fire training, highlighting both the professionalism and the challenges faced by first responders.
One image shows firefighters entering a building with a heavily burning front porch, while another features the Berkeley Fire Department’s Engine 351, a Spartan/Darley unit, positioned in front of the training site. A third photo captures a Broadview firefighter heading to the bucket as heavy fire burns through the roof, emphasizing the dangerous conditions they face. Another shot highlights the department’s unique Grumman AerialCat tower ladder mounted on an American LaFrance Century Series chassis, a rare and impressive piece of equipment. Additionally, the tower was elevated to deploy a master stream, demonstrating the department’s readiness for large-scale incidents.
Tim has compiled a full gallery of these images, offering a detailed visual record of the training. It's always valuable to see how departments prepare for real emergencies, and this event was no exception. The involvement of multiple agencies and the use of specialized equipment underscore the importance of ongoing training in maintaining public safety.
