Subject: MABAS – Illinois Leadership Change – Transition Overview

Following several months of careful planning and discussion, MABAS CEO Jay Reardon has announced his retirement from the role of MABAS-Illinois Chief Executive Officer. Effective June 30, 2017, he will step down from his position, making way for a smooth leadership transition. Chief Glenn Ericksen, who currently serves as the MABAS Administrative and Finance Section Chief, will take over as the new CEO starting July 1, 2017. In addition to his new role, Chief Reardon will continue to support the Leadership Team and Executive Board as an advisor until December 31, 2017.

Chief Ericksen brings a wealth of experience to the position. He retired three years prior as the Fire Chief of the Village of Arlington Heights after a long and distinguished career spanning four decades. Since then, he has served in his current role with MABAS, where he has proven to be a capable and respected leader. The MABAS Leadership Team unanimously endorsed his appointment as CEO, reflecting confidence in his abilities and vision for the organization.

Chief Reardon was first elected as MABAS-Illinois President in 1999 while serving as Fire Chief of the Northbrook Fire Department. During his tenure, MABAS expanded significantly, becoming a key player in emergency response across Illinois. In 2001, MABAS was invited to join the Illinois Terrorism Task Force as the fire services operational and mutual aid advisor for fire, EMS, and special operations teams. That same year, MABAS-Illinois and the Illinois Emergency Management Agency signed a historic intergovernmental agreement, allowing MABAS resources to be mobilized under the governor’s direction during disasters.

The events of September 11, 2001, marked a turning point for MABAS-Illinois. Under Chief Reardon’s leadership, the organization adapted quickly, expanding its role in public service and building one of the most efficient mutual aid systems in the country. In August 2005, MABAS was called upon through EMAC to assist in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, providing over 900 firefighters and 250 vehicles to New Orleans and 11 parishes in Louisiana. The team remained on the ground for six weeks, delivering critical support during a time of national crisis.

Later, MABAS-Illinois again supported Louisiana during Hurricanes Gustav and Ike. In 2008, Chief Reardon officially retired from the Northbrook Fire Department and became the first full-time CEO of MABAS-Illinois. Since 1999, the organization has grown to include more than 1,180 member fire agencies and 95 statewide response-capable Special Operations Teams. Additional achievements include the successful coordination of over $135 million in federal grants and the ownership of the 74,000-square-foot MABAS Readiness Center, which serves as the headquarters for all state-level MABAS operations.
