Tiskilwa train derailment

Tim Olk traveled to Tiskilwa, Illinois—a small town located 124 miles southwest of Chicago—on Friday to capture the aftermath of a partial train derailment that occurred overnight. The incident involved a freight train carrying ethanol for Archer Daniels Midland Co., one of the country's largest corn processors. According to the *Chicago Tribune*, the train crashed and exploded near the northeast side of the village early Friday morning. Residents reported being jolted awake by the force of the explosions, which sent bright orange flames and thick plumes of smoke into the sky. The Associated Press reported that each tanker car typically holds around 29,000 gallons of ethanol. Of the 131-car train, 26 cars derailed, with seven to nine of them containing ethanol, according to Mick Burkart, chief operating officer of Iowa Interstate Railroad. Due to the ongoing fire, officials were unable to approach the scene immediately to determine the cause of the accident. Several photographs taken by Tim Olk show the extent of the damage. One image captures smoldering tank cars scattered along a field of corn, while another shows emergency crews using water tankers to fight the flames. Firefighters deployed a deck gun in a nearby street, and portable water tanks were set up to provide critical resources in an area without access to hydrants. In the early morning hours, firefighters used a deluge gun to cool the remaining burning tank cars and reduce dangerous vapors. The scene was chaotic but well-managed, with local emergency teams working quickly to contain the situation. Tim has compiled a full gallery of images from the event, offering a detailed visual account of the derailment and its aftermath. You can view more photos here.
