What to Do When Someone Spray Paints Your Car

One of the most common forms of vandalism is spray paint. If you catch it early, you may be able to remove it quickly without causing lasting damage. However, the longer the paint sits, the harder it becomes to eliminate. So, what should you do if your car is defaced?

Try Washing It Off

This method is simple and effective—if the paint is still wet. Grab a sponge, some soap, and water, and gently scrub the area. With a bit of effort, you should be able to clean it off in one go without harming your car’s finish. Keep in mind that most spray paints dry within 24 hours. Once it's dry, you'll need a different approach.

Use Acetone or Lacquer Thinner

Acetone, commonly found in nail polish remover, can be an effective solution once the paint has dried. While it seems safe and easy to use, there's a risk of damaging your car’s original paint if you're too aggressive. Always test it on a small, hidden area first and rinse it off thoroughly after removing the paint.

Lacquer thinner is a stronger solvent and works similarly, but it carries a higher risk of damaging your car’s paint. It’s often used for wood finishes and can dissolve spray paint effectively. When using this method, start small and apply light pressure. Use a clean cloth and keep water nearby in case the paint starts to lift too much.

Try Clay and Rubbing Compounds

You can find clay and wax kits at most auto parts stores. These tools are designed to lift contaminants like spray paint from your car’s surface without scratching it. Gently rub the clay back and forth over the affected area, and the paint should begin to come off.

Rubbing compounds work in a similar way. Start with a small section and use a soft cloth or one with a slightly abrasive texture to work the compound into the painted area. Afterward, make sure to wax your car to protect the surface from future damage.

Consider Using Gasoline

Though it might sound unusual, some people swear by gasoline as a quick fix for removing spray paint. Apply it to a small area and watch the paint lift away. However, this method comes with risks—it can strip away your car’s clear coat. Only use it on small spots and always follow up with a fresh coat of wax to protect the paint.
