An interesting historical note about the 3-11 Alarm fire in Chicago on June 1, 2017, reveals that there was a similar 2-11 Alarm fire at the same location on April 24, 1983. To date, we haven’t found any of our contributors who have photos from that earlier incident. However, we do have some rare documentation and eyewitness accounts that help shed light on what happened back then.
This account comes from Steve Redick, who was on scene during the 1983 fire. He recalls that it was a busy Thursday morning, right in the middle of rush hour. The fire broke out in a two-story furniture store located at 2945 Milwaukee Avenue. The upper floor was completely enclosed by brick veneer, making access difficult. Fire was heavy throughout the building, and it eventually burned through and collapsed what appeared to be a bowstring truss roof.
The conditions for taking photos were challenging due to the mix of bright sunlight and deep shadows. Despite this, Steve managed to capture some remarkable images. He noted the operation of Squad 2’s new “snorkel†fully extended and in action, along with tower ladder operations and the use of a spare snorkel unit. Another interesting detail was Engine 69 connected to a hydrant in front of Engine 91’s former station at 3000 N Elbridge, just a short distance from the fire building.
Steve shared hundreds of photos from that day, and you can view all of them, along with video footage, on the site. Below are a few samples from his collection. While the actual images aren’t visible here, the descriptions offer a glimpse into the intensity and complexity of the event.
