On January 4, 2018, a serious three-alarm fire broke out at 2865 Sheridan Place in Evanston. Larry Shapiro captured powerful video and photo footage of the incident, showing the intense flames and heavy smoke rising from the structure. The scene involved a massive response from multiple departments, including all Evanston fire engines, both trucks, Squad 21, two ambulances, and the chief, deputy, and battalion officers, along with off-duty chiefs. Additional units from surrounding areas such as Wilmette, Winnetka, Northfield, Park Ridge, Niles, Morton Grove, Skokie, Des Plaines, and Glenview also arrived to assist.
The fire was clearly visible from a distance, with thick smoke engulfing the neighborhood and flames licking the sky. Firefighters worked tirelessly to contain the blaze, using aerial ladders, master streams, and equipment like the Pierce tractor-drawn aerial. Some images show firefighters in full gear, moving heavy hoses and working together under challenging conditions.
