Application
A tree chipper or woodchipper is a powerful machine designed to break down wood—such as branches, trunks, or logs—into smaller wood chips. These machines are commonly used in forestry, landscaping, and waste management. They can be portable or stationary, often mounted on wheels for easy transportation behind trucks or vans. Most models are powered by internal combustion engines ranging from 3 horsepower (2.2 kW) up to 1,000 horsepower (750 kW). Some high-power versions are truck-mounted and equipped with hydraulic cranes for heavy-duty use.
The basic structure of a wood chipper includes a hopper with a safety collar, the cutting mechanism, and an optional collection bin. When a branch is inserted into the hopper, it’s fed into the chipping unit where it’s shredded into small pieces. The chips then exit through a chute, which can direct them into a container or onto the ground. Typical chip sizes range from 1 inch (2.5 cm) to 2 inches (5.1 cm), making them ideal for mulch, composting, or papermaking processes. Many models utilize a flywheel to store energy and provide consistent power during operation.
