Application
A tree chipper or woodchipper is a machine used for reducing wood (typically branches or trunks) into smaller woodchips. These machines are often portable and mounted on wheels, making them suitable for towing behind trucks or vans. They are powered by internal combustion engines ranging from 3 horsepower (2.2 kW) to 1,000 horsepower (750 kW). Some high-power models are mounted directly on trucks with their own engine and often include a hydraulic crane.
Tree chippers typically consist of a hopper with a collar, the chipper mechanism, and an optional collection bin. A branch is inserted into the hopper, where the collar acts as a partial safety feature to prevent body parts from getting near the blades. The chips exit through a chute and can be directed into a truck-mounted container or onto the ground. The typical output size ranges from 1 inch (2.5 cm) to 2 inches (5.1 cm). These chips have various uses, such as ground cover or feedstock in papermaking. Most chippers use energy stored in a heavy flywheel to operate (though some use drums).
