2-Alarm brush fire in Hawthorn Woods. 10-18-15

The Lake Zurich Fire Department was called to a field of burning cattails in Hawthorn Woods on Sunday. The area was surrounded by homes, and access to the opposite side of the field was several blocks away, making it difficult for crews to reach the fire quickly. Because of the size of the area and the limited access, the department initially requested a MABAS Box Alarm and later upgraded to a Second Alarm to bring in more resources.

The address provided for the incident was 8 Westwind Court. I arrived after the second alarm companies had been dispatched, and by the time I got there, the fire was already out. However, I managed to capture a few photos of the scene to show what was going on.

It’s always interesting to see how quickly emergency services respond, even in situations that might seem less urgent at first glance. The fact that they escalated to a second alarm shows just how serious the situation was, especially with the proximity to residential areas. I think these images give a good sense of the scale of the operation and the effort put in by the firefighters to contain the fire before it could spread further.
