On the evening of September 11th, a significant fire broke out at an industrial site located at 3710 South California Avenue in Chicago. As one of the first responders on the scene, I can attest to the immense challenges we faced that night. The building, which spanned several hundred feet in length, was primarily filled with wooden pallets, making it highly combustible. Access to the area was severely limited due to surrounding embankments, extensive trucking yards, tall fences, and uneven terrain. Compounding these issues was a poor water supply and numerous dead-end mains, which complicated our firefighting efforts.
By the time I arrived around 2:11 AM, the original structure had already been engulfed in flames. Despite the intense heat, Squad 1 and Truck 54 had managed to reposition themselves strategically, signaling that the situation was under control. However, my initial assessment only covered a small section of the sprawling complex. Even then, the scale of destruction was evident—burning pallets and lingering smoke created a daunting scene.
