Common Car Issues from Extreme Heat

woman looking under car hoodLiving in New England, we're all too familiar with the scorching heat during the summer months. Ever wonder how this extreme heat impacts your car? It's something most drivers overlook until it's too late.

Summer is when AAA sees a spike in roadside assistance requests, often due to people taking more trips and cranking up the AC. To keep your car running smoothly through those long, hot stretches, there are several key areas you need to focus on.

Car Battery

Your car battery contains a liquid electrolyte made of water, acid, and lead plates. When it gets really hot, that liquid can evaporate, leaving the lead plates unprotected and prone to corrosion. This makes it harder for your battery to hold a charge, which means you might not be able to start your car. On average, a battery operates best at around 80 degrees Fahrenheit, but temperatures can soar to 140 degrees or higher while you're driving. For every 15 degrees above that ideal temperature, the battery's lifespan is cut in half. Using the AC more frequently in the summer adds extra stress to the battery. To protect your battery, try parking in shaded areas whenever possible. Regular drives help recharge the battery via the alternator, and it's always wise to have a professional check the connections and look for any signs of corrosion.

Tires

High temperatures can wreak havoc on your car's tires. First, they cause the air inside to expand—about one PSI for every 10-degree rise in temperature. If you don't regularly check your tire pressure, you could end up with overinflated tires, increasing the risk of a blowout. Additionally, this expansion puts uneven pressure on the tread, leading to faster wear in the center compared to the edges. Tires are made of rubber, so excessive heat combined with overinflation can distort their shape, causing further damage to the tread and potentially leading to cracks. Always make sure your tires are properly inflated and rotate them regularly to distribute wear evenly.

Oil

Extreme heat can do a number on the oil circulating through your engine. Not only does it cause some of the oil to evaporate, but it also thickens it, making it less effective at lubricating moving parts. Any dirt or debris picked up by the oil now has a greater abrasive effect, leading to more wear and tear on the engine components. If you're planning a long road trip this summer, it's a good idea to have your oil checked and possibly changed before you set off. Fresh oil ensures smoother operation and helps prevent unnecessary wear and tear.

Cooling System

When it gets unbearably hot outside, you're likely to rely heavily on your car's air conditioning system. But intense heat forces the entire cooling system, including the water pump, hoses, and radiator, to work overtime. This increased workload raises the risk of failure, such as a burst hose or a drained coolant supply. Both scenarios can lead to serious engine overheating, causing costly damage. Regularly inspect your cooling system and top off the coolant levels as needed to avoid such issues.

Gasoline

Extreme heat can alter the chemical composition of your fuel. Gasoline or ethanol in your tank can evaporate more easily in high temperatures, changing the air-to-fuel ratio. This results in a less dense airflow reaching the engine, which can lead to pre-ignition. Initially, the spark plugs take the brunt of the damage, but if this problem persists, the pistons and piston rings may also suffer. To avoid these complications, consider having your fuel system inspected and cleaned if necessary.

Belts and Hoses

Just like your tires, many of the belts and hoses under the hood can degrade rapidly in high temperatures. The heat from the engine can cause these components to crack, bulge, or become brittle, compromising their functionality. In some cases, they may even break entirely, causing fluid leaks that can severely impact your engine's performance. Inspect these parts regularly and replace them promptly if any signs of wear appear. Don't wait until they fail completely—repairing them early can save you a lot of trouble down the line.
