Fire departments react to the severe weather

**From the Prospect Heights Fire Protection District:** Hey everyone, I wanted to share an important update from our team here at the Prospect Heights Fire District. As of Saturday evening, January 4th, we’ve made some changes to our staffing levels to better handle the severe winter conditions. This means we now have an extra ambulance on standby and our water tanker is ready to roll. These adjustments are critical because when there's heavy snowfall, accessing fire hydrants becomes challenging. And let’s face it—when it’s this cold, water mains can burst or hydrants can freeze up entirely, making them unusable. Having the tanker on hand gives us another option to get water to where it’s needed most. Fire Chief Don Gould explained that during freezing temperatures, the pumps on our fire engines might freeze if the water inside isn’t actively flowing through a hose. That’s why we’re sending additional staff in support vehicles when necessary. It’s all part of our emergency protocol, which we activate almost every year during harsh winters. Thankfully, so far, we haven’t had any major incidents linked directly to the weather. But I want to stress how important it is for everyone to call 9-1-1 immediately if they notice anything unusual. Response times are already stretched thin because of the conditions, and early intervention can make all the difference. If you’re out and about, consider helping us by clearing snow around nearby hydrants. Every little bit helps! Let’s keep each other safe this winter. Best regards, Drew Smith Deputy Chief Prospect Heights Fire Protection District --- **From the Palatine Fire Department:** Hi folks, the Palatine Fire Department is reaching out today with a quick request. We’ve noticed that some of our fire hydrants are getting buried under piles of snow, which makes responding to emergencies even more challenging than usual. If you’re able, could you help us dig out the hydrants in your neighborhood? Even a small effort can go a long way toward keeping our community safer. We understand that these are tough conditions for everyone, but every bit of assistance counts. Thank you all for your cooperation and support during this time. Stay warm, stay safe, and don’t hesitate to reach out if you need help. Take care, The Palatine Fire Department
