Foundation and Fire District supply Narcan kits to police

Excerpts from ChicagoTribune.com:

A critical shortage of Narcan kits, which police use to reverse opioid overdoses, has been reported by the Lake County Health Department. However, a local foundation and a fire protection district stepped in just in time to help.

The new Narcan kits being purchased are a more user-friendly nasal spray version, approved quickly by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. This advancement is seen as a game-changer for first responders who need to act fast during an overdose.

"We were really in a tough spot if it wasn’t for the Filler Foundation and the Warren-Waukegan Fire Protection District," said Susan McKnight, coordinator of the county’s substance-abuse program. "Their support made all the difference."

Phillip DeRuntz, a trustee with the fire district, explained that at a recent meeting of the Lake County Opioid Initiative, he learned the health department had only 50 kits left. Then Susan Guggenheim from the Filler Foundation announced a matching grant program that would cover up to $25,000 for additional kits.

McKnight added that the new kits, provided by Adapt Pharmaceutical, come pre-assembled and can be used in just one nostril—unlike older models that required splitting the dose between both nostrils. Each kit contains two doses, making them more efficient and easier to use in emergencies.

For the past two years, the health department had been receiving 3,000 kits annually from Virginia-based company Kaleo, distributed among 2,000 law enforcement officers in Lake County. But this year, due to a nationwide shortage, they could only provide 1,000 injectable kits.

Susan Guggenheim shared the story behind the Filler Foundation, created by Mark and Julie Filler of Highland Park after their 23-year-old son died of an opioid overdose. He had initially been revived by paramedics after a sports injury, but relapsed and eventually passed away. "This was an area where we could make an immediate impact and save lives," she said.

The foundation donated $40,000 upfront, plus a matching grant challenge of up to $25,000. The fire district contributed $3,750, and other local organizations have since joined in, including Compass Health of Northbrook with a $1,000 donation and the Vernon Hills Police Department with $1,800.

Guggenheim also introduced a new way for people to help: text "Hero23" to 41444 to make a donation. It's a simple yet powerful way for individuals to contribute to the fight against the opioid crisis.
