How has the UK’s behaviour towards energy bills changed since the start of 2022?

As I sit here scrolling through my emails, I came across something that caught my attention. It was a survey result from March 2022 where they asked the British public about how their energy bills were changing due to a 54% hike in the energy price cap. That increase went into effect on April 1st, 2022. By mid-April, the average UK household was paying an additional £693 annually on their energy bills. If you're interested, you can check out the full survey results from earlier this year [here](link). Fast forward to today, back in October, experts initially predicted a 30% increase in energy prices, but instead, it skyrocketed by 80%! That's an annual cost of £3,549 for the average household. At that point, the government stepped in with the 'Energy Price Guarantee', capping household energy bills at £2,500 for two years. But, as often happens in politics, things changed quickly, and now this guarantee is only valid until April 2023. This sudden shift has left many Brits confused. People aren't sure what their energy bills should realistically cost anymore. So, we decided to revisit UK residents to see exactly how much their energy bills have gone up since the initial price cap announcement in March 2022. We also wanted to hear their thoughts on all the government programs designed to keep energy costs manageable. [Insert Image] We asked, "Since March 2022, by approximately what percentage has your electricity bill increased?" Shockingly, 60.3% of British residents reported their electricity bill increasing by up to 50%, while 16.9% saw their bills jump between 50-100%. Even more alarming, 4.1% of UK residents experienced their electricity bills doubling! It's not surprising that these numbers remain consistent across different regions in the UK. Whether you're in Plymouth, Liverpool, or Glasgow, the impact is widespread. For instance, 73% of Plymouth residents saw their bills go up by up to 50%, similar to 65% in Liverpool and 58% in Glasgow. With all the changes in government policies, we posed another question to the public: "To what extent do you agree or disagree with the following statements?" - **I do not have a good understanding of how much bills should cost.** - Agree: 34.8% - Disagree: 39% - **I do not currently know what my utilities are set to increase by.** - Agree: 40% - Disagree: 34.9% - **I avoid checking my utility bills.** - Agree: 21.4% - Disagree: 57.1% - **I find energy bills confusing.** - Agree: 41% - Disagree: 32% - **I would change energy providers if I had a better understanding of how.** - Agree: 35.6% - Disagree: 26% From these numbers, it's clear that a significant portion of UK residents are struggling to grasp what's happening with their energy bills.
