Chicago Tribune recently reported an alarming incident that took place at the Lyons post office on Saturday morning. A postal worker named Mark Thompson stumbled upon something unusual while sorting through a pile of mail. Inside a damaged envelope, he noticed what appeared to be half a stick of dynamite, a bullet, and some white powder hidden beneath a stack of packages.
Upon discovering this suspicious package, officials from the Cook County Bomb Squad were immediately called in, along with multiple fire departments. According to Lyons police, the post office was promptly evacuated around 8:11 a.m. as part of the hazardous materials protocol.
Tim Olk captured several images from the scene, providing a firsthand look into the situation. In one image, hazmat technicians from MABAS Division 10 gather near their specialized squad to prepare for entering the building. Another photo shows a briefing being held to strategize how they would safely approach the investigation.
Further images depict the technicians exiting the building, fully suited in protective gear due to the unknown nature of the substances involved. Outside the building, two firefighters from Bedford Park can be seen in basic protective attire, ready to support the entry team. Additionally, Lyons Squad 1312 is shown connected to a hydrant, supplying water for firefighting efforts.
The Pleasantview rehab unit also joined the operation to offer assistance to the firefighters on site. These photos give a clear view of the extensive precautions taken during such incidents.
