On Tuesday afternoon (April 17, 2018), emergency services in Wheeling were dispatched to the area of 250 W. Dundee Road following reports of a serious car accident involving a vehicle that had become trapped. Upon arriving at the scene, which was located in front of the local post office, Chief 2400 found an SUV that had veered off the road and collided head-on with a tree. The lone occupant of the vehicle sustained injuries as a result of the crash.
Eyewitnesses at the post office recounted seeing the SUV clip another vehicle before hurtling through a chain-link fence and slamming into the tree. Northbrook Ambulance 10 promptly transported the injured driver to the nearest medical facility. Firefighting units from Wheeling, including Engine 23R, Engine 42, Truck 24, along with Battalion 24 and additional support vehicles, were present to assist with the situation.
Attached is a photograph taken by Larry Shapiro, capturing the moment firefighters tended to the victim at the crash site. The images below showcase various angles of the accident, including a Chevrolet Equinox that had been severely damaged after its collision with the tree. Additional photos highlight the extensive response effort, featuring Rosenbauer America Commander fire engines positioned at the scene and Gene’s Towing removing the wreckage.
