On Tuesday afternoon (April 17, 2018), emergency services in Wheeling were dispatched to the area of 250 West Dundee Road following reports of a serious car accident involving a possible vehicle entrapment. According to initial reports from Chief 2400, who arrived first at the scene near the post office, a sport utility vehicle had veered off the roadway and collided head-on with a large tree. The lone occupant of the vehicle sustained noticeable injuries during the incident.
Eyewitnesses at the post office recounted seeing the SUV sideswipe another car prior to its catastrophic crash through a chain-link fence and subsequent collision with the tree. Northbrook Ambulance 10 quickly transported the injured driver to the nearest medical facility for treatment.
The extensive response included units from the Wheeling Fire Department, including Engine 23R, Engine 42, Truck 24, along with Battalion 24 and Chief 2401. Their swift arrival and coordinated efforts were crucial in managing the aftermath of this high-impact crash.
Attached images, captured by Larry Shapiro, depict the aftermath of the crash, showing firefighters attending to the victim and the severely damaged Chevy Equinox that had ended up against the tree. Additional photos display various emergency vehicles, such as the Rosenbauer America Commander fire engines, which were deployed to secure the scene and assist in extricating the trapped driver if necessary.
The images also showcase Gene’s Towing in the process of removing the mangled vehicle from the site, further illustrating the extent of the damage caused by the collision. This series of photos provides a comprehensive view of the scene, highlighting both the immediate danger faced by the driver and the efficient response by local emergency personnel.
In addition to the primary vehicle involved, several other medium-sized photos capture the surrounding chaos and the presence of multiple emergency resources, including additional fire trucks and support vehicles. These images collectively tell the story of a dramatic event that unfolded in a suburban setting, emphasizing the importance of rapid response teams in such critical situations.
Overall, the combination of eyewitness accounts and photographic evidence paints a vivid picture of a harrowing accident that could have been much worse without the prompt intervention of Wheeling's emergency services.
