Oshkosh moving Medtec and Specialty Vehicles to Florida

Firegeezer.com recently reported that Oshkosh is shutting down its Medtec facilities located in Pidgeon, MI, and Goshen, IN, with plans to relocate production to the Pierce facility in Bradenton, FL. This move is expected to bring about significant changes for both the manufacturing and office staff. According to the report, Oshkosh's Medtec Ambulance division will undergo relocation and consolidation with Pierce Manufacturing in Bradenton, creating approximately 100 to 150 new jobs. This strategic shift qualifies Oshkosh for substantial economic development incentives, totaling up to $1.44 million. The state of Florida is contributing the largest portion, $1.07 million, followed by Manatee County with $333,732, and Pinellas County with $40,000. In addition to the Medtec facilities, Oshkosh Specialty Vehicles, which operates plants in Harvey and Calumet City, IL, is also making the move to Florida. This division, known for producing high-tech mobile medical imaging vehicles and transportable trailers, will merge with the Clearwater branch of Frontline, a company specializing in command and communications vehicles as well as broadcast vehicles. For these newly created Clearwater roles, Oshkosh has committed to offering an average annual salary of at least $57,897, which is 150% of the average annual wage in Pinellas County ($38,598). While this news has not yet been officially posted on the Pierce or Oshkosh websites, it was sourced from the St Petersburg Times. Brandenton.com also covered the story, highlighting that Pierce Manufacturing anticipates beginning the hiring process by March, a move that could significantly impact Manatee County's current unemployment rate of 12.6%, representing 18,267 unemployed individuals. John Daggett, a spokesperson for Oshkosh Corp., stated that this consolidation will lead to layoffs across the Midwest plants as operations shift to Bradenton and Clearwater. Specifically, Medtec Ambulances will lay off 45 people at its Goshen, IN headquarters, 60 employees at its manufacturing plant there, and 70 workers at its White Pigeon, MI location. Meanwhile, Oshkosh Specialty Vehicles plans to let go of 80 employees at its Illinois facilities. This decision marks a significant transition for Oshkosh, as it seeks to optimize its operations and take advantage of potential economic benefits in Florida. While the move promises growth in certain areas, it also raises concerns about job security and economic impact in the Midwest communities affected by these closures.
