Streamwood receives SAFER Grant – reopens shuttered firehouse

The Daily Herald recently featured an article highlighting the Streamwood Fire Department's decision to reopen a long-shuttered fire station. This comes nearly four years after the controversial closure of the Park Boulevard station, which left many residents feeling uneasy about potential delays in emergency response times. However, thanks to a generous federal grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), the department has managed to bring this vital facility back online. The newly reopened station is now fully operational, with at least three firefighter-paramedics stationed there for every 24-hour shift. Fire Chief Chris Clark expressed optimism about the impact this will have on response times, particularly in areas like Lake Street, which has seen significant industrial growth over the past few years. Facilities such as a new 24-hour food processing plant have contributed to a noticeable uptick in emergency calls, particularly in the southern part of the village. This re-opening was made possible by a $627,000 federal grant awarded to Streamwood in December 2012 under FEMA's Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) program. Streamwood was one of only two departments in Illinois to receive this funding, allowing the department to expand its firefighting staff back to 50 personnel. Prior to this, the department had been operating with reduced staffing due to budget constraints, cutting down to 47 firefighting positions through natural attrition. Additionally, the department had eliminated the role of a full-time fire inspector, redistributing those responsibilities among existing staff. In April 2010, the Park Boulevard station was closed to streamline operations, but this decision sparked community backlash and concerns about longer response times. Matt Dobson, a local resident who led the initial protests against the closure, only discovered the station's reopening when he noticed the American flag flying at the entrance during a casual drive-by. Until recently, the building had been used solely for training and equipment storage. According to Chief Clark, Streamwood is committed to keeping these three new firefighter-paramedic positions for at least two years. With the local economy showing signs of recovery, he expressed confidence that the department would be able to sustain these roles beyond the initial period. "This is a significant step forward for our community," Clark stated. "We’re confident that with the current financial outlook improving, we’ll be able to continue providing this level of service without issue." For now, the reopening of the Park Boulevard station marks a positive shift for Streamwood, ensuring quicker responses to emergencies and addressing the concerns of residents who were initially skeptical of the closure. Thanks, Dan!
