Suzhou High-tech Zone Builds China's Automotive Industry Highlands

The 2nd China Auto Parts Suppliers Conference is set to take place in the Suzhou High-tech Zone this June. To announce the event, organizers recently held a press conference in Beijing, highlighting the growing significance of the region in China’s automotive industry. With support from Dongfeng, the Suzhou High-tech Zone is striving to become a leading hub for automobile manufacturing and parts production. The auto parts sector has now become one of the district's key industries, driving comprehensive industrial upgrades and structural optimization. As a core component of Suzhou’s “One Body, Two Wings” development strategy, the Suzhou High-tech Zone is committed to building a world-class automotive industry that integrates R&D, manufacturing, sales, maintenance, and exhibitions. Currently, over 130 auto parts companies operate within the zone, sourcing components from more than 20 countries and regions, including the U.S., Japan, and South Korea. These companies specialize in critical systems such as chassis, engines, and steering mechanisms. Notably, the Suzhou High-tech Zone produces a wide range of high-quality auto parts. For instance, it hosts Japan’s largest honeycomb ceramic manufacturer, NGK Co., Ltd., as well as the intermediate film producer (Suzhou) Co., Ltd. Another major player, Timken-NSK, the second-largest automotive bearing manufacturer globally, also operates in the area. Recently, the Snow R&D and Design Center, a top Japanese automotive design firm, established its base in Suzhou Science and Technology City. Additionally, Huanghai Automobile has set up a factory in the zone to produce passenger buses for the 2008 Olympic Games. With China’s economy booming and rising household incomes, the country is entering a new era of automobile ownership. In 2005, both production and sales of vehicles surpassed five million units, marking the formation of three major automotive clusters in the Bohai Rim, along the Yangtze River, and in the south. Suzhou, located at the heart of the Yangtze River Auto Industry Cluster, enjoys strategic advantages. Moreover, the region’s strong IT electronics and precision machinery sectors serve as foundational industries for auto parts companies, further supporting the growth of high-tech enterprises. At the press conference, Guan Aiguo, Director of the Suzhou High-tech Zone Management Committee, emphasized the area’s policy benefits, quality living conditions, and efficient government services as key factors attracting auto parts companies. He also highlighted the availability of skilled labor, making Suzhou an attractive destination for high-tech investments. Currently, two major areas in the Suzhou High-tech Zone are closely tied to the automotive industry: the Auto Parts Industrial Park and the Suzhou Hi-tech International Automobile City. The former focuses on advanced automotive electronics R&D and aims to establish a robust research platform. The latter leverages the existing range of over 200 auto parts products to create an integrated exhibition and service platform that combines the automotive industry with car culture. With continuous investment and strategic development, the Suzhou High-tech Zone is well-positioned to become a global leader in the auto parts industry.
