Suzhou High-tech Zone Builds China's Automotive Industry Highlands

The 2nd China Auto Parts Suppliers Conference is set to take place in Suzhou High-tech Zone this June. To announce the event, organizers recently held a press conference in Beijing, highlighting the region's growing role as a key player in China's automotive industry. With the support of Dongfeng, Suzhou High-tech Zone aims to become a leading hub for auto parts and components, driving the local industrial structure toward higher quality and more advanced development. As a core component of Suzhou’s “One Body, Two Wings” development strategy, the Suzhou High-tech Zone is dedicated to building a comprehensive automotive ecosystem that includes R&D, manufacturing, sales, maintenance, and exhibitions. The area has already attracted over 130 auto parts manufacturers from around the world, including the U.S., Japan, South Korea, and other countries. These companies produce a wide range of critical components such as chassis systems, engines, and steering mechanisms. Notably, Suzhou High-tech Zone is home to several globally recognized brands. For example, Japan’s NGK Co., Ltd., the largest manufacturer of honeycomb ceramics, produces its products there. Additionally, (Suzhou) Co., Ltd. is known for its intermediate film, while Timken-NSK, the second-largest global supplier of automotive bearings, also operates in the region. Recently, the Snow R&D and Design Center, one of the world’s top automotive design firms, established its base in Suzhou Science and Technology City. Moreover, Huanghai Automobile has opened a factory in the zone to manufacture buses for the 2008 Beijing Olympics. With China’s rapid economic growth and rising consumer income, the country has entered a new era of automobile ownership. In 2005, both production and sales of vehicles surpassed five million units, marking the formation of three major automotive clusters in the Bohai Rim, along the Yangtze River, and in the southern region. Suzhou, located at the heart of the Yangtze River auto cluster, enjoys strategic advantages. Furthermore, the region’s strong foundation in IT electronics and precision machinery provides essential support for the auto parts industry, offering great potential for future growth. At the press conference, Guan Aiguo, Director of the Suzhou High-tech Zone Management Committee, emphasized the area’s competitive advantages. These include favorable policies, strong infrastructure, efficient government services, and an abundant supply of skilled talent. Such factors have made Suzhou a top choice for high-tech auto parts companies looking to expand their operations. Currently, two major zones within Suzhou High-tech Zone are closely tied to the automotive industry: the Auto Parts Industrial Park and the Suzhou Hi-tech International Automobile City. The Auto Parts Industrial Park focuses on advanced automotive electronics and research and development, aiming to establish a robust innovation platform. Meanwhile, the Suzhou Hi-tech International Automobile City has been developed to showcase the region’s diverse auto parts offerings, creating a space that blends the automotive industry with cultural experiences.
