Wintrhop Harbor has been added to the site

Winthrop Harbor, located along the shores of Lake Michigan in the northeast corner of MABAS Division 4, just across the Wisconsin border, is home to a dedicated fire department that operates from a single station. This station is housed within the municipal building, sharing space with the local police department. Despite its small size, the four-bay facility is packed with nine pieces of apparatus, making it one of the most well-equipped departments in the region. The department is unique in Illinois for being one of the few all-Seagrave fire departments, featuring two fire engines and a 75-foot Meanstick quint. Their long history with FWD (Federal-Wayne) rigs is still visible today, as they continue to display FWD logos on their modern Seagrave units. All of their equipment, except for the ambulances, is painted in a clean white color, giving them a classic and uniform appearance. One of their most notable vehicles is a restored 1949 FWD engine, which is used primarily for parades and special events. The engine was even taken to Clintonville, Wisconsin, for the Seagrave 125th anniversary celebration, where it made a strong impression. A photo from that event shows the vintage engine proudly displayed during the parade, a testament to the department’s rich heritage. Another image captures the officer’s side of the 1949 FWD engine during its visit to Seagrave, highlighting the attention to detail in its restoration. These photos not only showcase the historical significance of the vehicle but also reflect the pride the department takes in preserving its legacy. A vintage fleet photo from the 1970s, captured by Bill Friedrich, gives a glimpse into the department’s past. It features a mix of classic vehicles, including the 1949 and 1952 FWD engines, a 1966 Dodge/Welch mini pumper, a 1963 American LaFrance engine, a 1973 P-Series Seagrave engine, and a 1974 Ford/Welch squad unit. This collection tells the story of a department that has evolved over time while maintaining a deep connection to its roots.
