Winthrop Harbor, located along the shores of Lake Michigan in the northeast corner of MABAS Division 4, just across the Wisconsin border, is home to a dedicated fire department that operates from a single station. This station is housed within the municipal building, sharing space with the local police department. Despite its small size, the four-bay facility is packed with nine pieces of apparatus, making it one of the most well-equipped departments in the region.
The department is unique in Illinois for being one of the few all-Seagrave fire departments, featuring two fire engines and a 75-foot Meanstick quint. Their long history with FWD (Federal-Wayne) rigs is still visible today, as they continue to display FWD logos on their modern Seagrave units. All of their equipment, except for the ambulances, is painted in a clean white color, giving them a classic and uniform appearance.
One of their most notable vehicles is a restored 1949 FWD engine, which is used primarily for parades and special events. The engine was even taken to Clintonville, Wisconsin, for the Seagrave 125th anniversary celebration, where it made a strong impression. A photo from that event shows the vintage engine proudly displayed during the parade, a testament to the department’s rich heritage.
