Winthrop Harbor is a small community located on the shores of Lake Michigan, in the northeast corner of MABAS Division 4, just across the Wisconsin border. The fire department operates from a single station that shares space with the police department inside the municipal building. Despite its size, the four-bay station is packed with equipment, housing nine apparatus in total. What sets Winthrop Harbor apart is their strong connection to Seagrave — they are one of the few all-Seagrave departments in Illinois, featuring two engines and a 75-foot Meanstick quint. Their long history with FWD (Federal Wheel Loaders) is also evident, as they have retained the classic FWD logos on all their modern Seagrave units. All their fire apparatus, except for ambulances, are painted white, giving the department a clean and uniform look.
One of the most notable pieces of their collection is a restored 1949 FWD engine, which is used for parades and special events. This historic unit even made the trip to Clintonville, Wisconsin, for the Seagrave 125th anniversary celebration. The engine was displayed during the parade, highlighting the department’s deep roots in fire service history.
A photo taken during the event shows the 1949 FWD engine in Clintonville, captured by local photographer Bill Friedrich. Another image showcases the officer's side of the restored engine when it was on display at Seagrave’s headquarters. These photos offer a glimpse into the pride and tradition that define the Winthrop Harbor Fire Department.
Looking back at the department’s history, a vintage photo from the 1970s, also taken by Bill Friedrich, captures the fleet of that era. It includes the 1949 and 1952 FWD engines, a 1966 Dodge/Welch mini pumper, a 1963 900 Series American LaFrance engine, a 1973 P-Series Seagrave engine, and a 1974 Ford/Welch squad unit. This snapshot reflects the evolution of the department over the decades and their continued commitment to protecting the community.
