Harsh Canadian winters are no joke, especially for diesel trucks. While preparing your vehicle for the season is crucial, many diesel truck owners often overlook certain details that could impact performance. Even if you've just bought a brand-new truck, these steps shouldn't be skipped.
Take glow plugs, for instance. They’re essential for cold starts, but did you know they can take anywhere from 1 to 15 seconds—or more—to warm up? The time depends on various factors like outside temperature, engine temperature, and the lifespan of the plug. If your truck has glow plugs, it's important to check them before the mercury dips below zero. Faulty glow plugs can cause diesel leaks into the exhaust pipe, difficulty starting the vehicle, and reduced engine power. Although your truck might still run with a defective glow plug, it could be putting unnecessary strain on the engine and increasing the risk of breakdowns.
Another overlooked detail is the windshield washer fluid. Regular summer fluid will freeze when temperatures drop, so before winter sets in, make sure you drain any old fluid and replace it with a winter-grade product. Always opt for the lowest temperature rating on the label, such as -40°C or -50°C. And remember, topping off with winter fluid won’t work if the existing fluid at the bottom of the tank freezes.
The fuel filter is another critical component. A clogged filter can lead to issues like jerky acceleration or even failure to start. Regular maintenance is key here. Most diesel trucks require their fuel filters to be changed every 80,000 to 100,000 kilometers. If it’s been a while since your last replacement, consider getting it done before winter hits.
Don’t forget about the block heater, which is often overlooked by diesel truck owners. This handy device helps keep the engine warm overnight, making it easier to start in frigid conditions. To test it, use a multimeter set to ohms. A reading between 9 and 25 ohms indicates the block heater is functioning correctly. Any reading under 9 suggests there may be an issue that needs addressing.
Lastly, don’t neglect your windshield. Even minor chips or cracks can expand rapidly due to temperature fluctuations. Inspect your windshield thoroughly and have any damage repaired before winter arrives. A damaged windshield not only affects visibility but also weakens the structural integrity of the vehicle.
