Recently, I came across some interesting updates regarding Engine 23's old rig, the 2000 American LaFrance Eagle, which is now part of the Chicago Fire Department's spare fleet. A few readers informed me that the pump on this vehicle has been removed and replaced with a large compartment, allowing it to function as a backup squad unit. Jack Connors stumbled upon this reserve squad vehicle while it was serving as the second piece for Squad 5. He managed to snap a few photos during one of their runs and generously shared them so everyone could get a better look. This particular rig carries the shop number D572.
The transformation of this engine into a reserve squad piece is quite noticeable. In one of Jack's photos, you can clearly see the roll-up compartment door where the pump enclosure used to be. The vehicle retains its original design in many ways, but the absence of the pump gives it a unique appearance. Another photo from Jack's collection highlights the transverse compartment that now occupies the space where the pump module once stood. Aside from this change, the rest of the vehicle appears unchanged.
I also heard from Tim Olk, who spotted this same rig at a 2-11 alarm fire on 118th Street near Yale. His photo captures the moment when the new reserve squad piece was working alongside Squad 5. It's fascinating to see how these vehicles adapt to different roles within the department. Tim's shot provides another perspective on how the rig operates in real-world situations.
It’s always exciting to see how older equipment finds new life within the fire service. This particular vehicle seems to be holding up well despite its modifications, and it’s great to have these visual records showing its current state. Whether it’s in action or sitting idle, the history behind each piece of apparatus adds character to the department’s fleet.
