CFD & suburbs train for tornado
The Chicago Fire Department, along with several suburban MABAS divisions, is conducting a 24-hour mock tornado drill in the Englewood neighborhood today. The exercise aims to test emergency response protocols and improve coordination among first responders in the event of a real-life disaster.

Chicago and suburban firefighters gathered in Englewood on Tuesday morning for a large-scale, 24-hour disaster drill.
Larry Langford, a spokesperson for the Chicago Fire Department, explained that the drill is designed to simulate what would happen if a tornado struck the area. He added that the responding units won’t be told exactly what to expect during the exercise.
The drill started at 9 a.m., near West 58th Street and South Normal Boulevard.
As part of the simulation, firefighters will rescue dozens of mannequins and approximately 120 mock victims from two collapsed buildings—one an apartment complex and the other a parking garage.
Langford said each of the mock victims will be dressed to look injured or deceased, with some trapped in the rubble. Each victim will have a card displaying vital signs for fire and EMS teams to triage effectively.
