Last Tuesday, we highlighted the inclusion of the Darien-Woodridge Fire District on our website. Among the vehicles showcased at Station 2 was a truly unique antique engine with quite the storied past. Jack Connors graciously shared some detailed information about this remarkable piece of firefighting history, along with a couple of photos.
This engine is a 1949 Oshkosh/Howe model equipped with a powerful 1,000-GPM pump and a massive 1,200-gallon water tank. The Oshkosh chassis is a Model W-2201, bearing the serial number 3541. The Howe unit carries the serial number HR-10-7961.
Attached is an image showing the 1949 Oshkosh Howe engine as it appeared when it was lettered for the Belmont Fire District. Jack Connors' collection includes this photo, providing a glimpse into its earlier days.
Originally, this engine served at the prestigious Argonne National Laboratory in Argonne, Illinois. Later, it transferred to Grandview Park, Illinois, which eventually became part of Oak Lawn. Eventually, it found its way to the Belmont Fire District, which later merged into the Darien-Woodridge Fire District.
Here's another image from Jack Connors' collection. In this picture, you can see the current state of the engine, now adorned with a Darien-Woodridge Fire District decal. However, the original Belmont Fire Protection District name remains visible on the hood. These images capture the rich history and evolution of this extraordinary vehicle.
I personally find it fascinating how such pieces of machinery carry not just their physical presence but also the legacy of the communities they’ve served. This particular engine has been a part of significant changes over the decades, moving from one district to another, each time adapting to new roles while retaining its core identity. It’s a testament to both the durability of these machines and the dedication of the firefighters who have operated them.
If anyone has any additional stories or details about this engine, I’d love to hear them. There’s always more to uncover when it comes to these historical gems.
