This is from Larry Shapiro:
On Friday afternoon, May 28, 2015, Wilmette firefighters responded to a call at 506 5th Street after a resident reported smoke coming from their second-floor apartment. Upon arrival, the crews discovered a small fire in the basement that had started spreading up the pipe chase toward the fourth floor.
The situation escalated quickly, and the alarm was upgraded to a Code 4, indicating a working fire. This prompted additional units from neighboring towns, including Skokie, Winnetka, Glenview, Glencoe, Northbrook, and Evanston, to assist. Firefighters worked on all floors, opening walls to locate and contain the blaze.
