On what was otherwise a calm and beautiful day, Larry Shapiro arrived at a fire scene at 1010 Johnson Drive in Buffalo Grove, where an industrial facility was engulfed in smoke. Emergency crews were called after reports of smoke inside the building, and upon arrival, they found the structure had already been evacuated. Thick smoke filled the interior, prompting immediate action. A machine inside the building had sparked a fire that ignited some filters, leading to the emergency. Northbrook Tower Ladder 12 was dispatched as a second unit, while Buffalo Grove Engine 26 quickly deployed a single line to extinguish the flames.
Photos from the scene show the intense conditions firefighters faced. One image captures Buffalo Grove Tower 25 being raised in case roof access was needed. Another shows Engine 26 entering the building with a hose line to suppress the fire. Smoke still lingered in the production area of Vapor Bus International, highlighting the severity of the situation. Firefighters were seen being hosed down after exiting the building, a precautionary step to ensure no harmful substances remained on their gear or skin. Additional photos show two Ferrara units parked outside the facility and another firefighter undergoing cleanup.
The incident, though quickly contained, serves as a reminder of the dangers faced by first responders every day. Despite the quick response, the fire caused disruption and required multiple units to manage. The community remains grateful for the efforts of the Buffalo Grove Fire Department and their partners in keeping the public safe.
