Wheeling house fire 1-14-11

This evening around 7:30 PM, the Wheeling Fire Department responded to multiple calls about a house fire located on the 100 block of Manchester Drive West. Upon arrival, firefighters from the first responding units found an attached garage fully engulfed in flames at 115 Manchester. They quickly escalated the situation to a Code 4 response, which prompted mutual aid support from neighboring departments including Northbrook, Lincolnshire, Buffalo Grove, and Arlington Heights. Unfortunately, due to other commitments within Wheeling's own ranks, there were fewer resources available for the initial response. Despite these challenges, crews managed to swiftly contain the blaze primarily to the garage, preventing significant spread into the main house, though it did extend slightly into the attic. Larry Shapiro and Tim Olk were present at the scene, capturing several images that vividly depict the intensity of the situation. A comprehensive gallery of their photos is available HERE. One of the first vehicles on-site was Wheeling Engine 23, which played a crucial role in managing the fire. Firefighters deployed both pre-connect hoses and a 2.5-inch line from the rear of the structure, working diligently to control the rapidly spreading flames. In addition to Engine 23, Wheeling Tower 42—a 1994 Sutphen mid-mount tower ladder—was strategically positioned in front of the residence to provide aerial support and additional firefighting capabilities. Smoke billowed dramatically through the living room window of the single-story home, creating an intense visual reminder of the power of fire. Larry Shapiro’s photographs capture this moment with striking clarity, highlighting the heroic efforts of the firefighters who worked tirelessly under pressure. Their swift action undoubtedly prevented what could have been a far more devastating outcome, showcasing the dedication and skill of the Wheeling Fire Department and its allies. As the night wore on, the collaborative effort among various departments ensured that the fire was brought under control efficiently. The community can be grateful for the professionalism and teamwork displayed by all involved, as they mitigated potential disaster and protected the surrounding area.
