Which Generation is the "Greenest"?

It's widely believed that Generation Z (those aged 16-24) are the most outspoken advocates for addressing climate change. From participating in demonstrations to raising awareness on platforms like Instagram and TikTok, there’s an impression that younger people are leading the charge when it comes to tackling greenhouse gas emissions.

But our recent study tells a different story. While Gen Z certainly has a strong voice, other age groups are proving just as committed—or even more so—to fighting the climate crisis. We surveyed 2,000 individuals ranging from 16 to 70 years old, encompassing various backgrounds, ethnicities, and genders, to uncover which generation is truly at the forefront of sustainability efforts.

Who Tops the List?

Surprisingly, Baby Boomers came out on top in terms of eco-conscious actions. A solid 75% of them have ramped up their recycling efforts to contribute to environmental preservation. Traditionalists and Gen X aren’t far behind, with 74% of each group also committing to increased recycling habits.

On the flip side, only a third of Gen Z respondents (33%) reported regularly recycling, with millennials clocking in at a similar rate of 35%. Interestingly, older generations are also more proactive about enhancing the energy efficiency of their homes. Nearly 20% of participants over 50 mentioned they've taken steps such as installing solar panels to minimize their carbon footprint.

As we collectively strive to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050, it’s fascinating to see how each generation is stepping up to meet this challenge. Solar power, in particular, seems to be gaining traction among older demographics, who are investing in renewable energy solutions for their homes.
