Which Generation is the "Greenest"?

It's often said that Gen Z, those aged 16-24, are at the forefront when it comes to advocating for climate action. They're frequently seen at rallies and protests, using their voices and platforms to push for environmental awareness. Social media is flooded with posts from this demographic, highlighting their dedication to combating climate change.

But here’s an interesting twist: our recent study suggests that older generations might be quietly leading the charge in their own way. In fact, some are even going further than expected to address the global climate crisis.

To uncover who’s truly making strides toward sustainability, we surveyed 2,000 individuals from various age groups—ranging from 16 to 70 years old, representing diverse backgrounds in terms of race, gender, and ethnicity. The goal was simple: identify which generation is emerging as the most environmentally conscious.

And the winner is…

Surprisingly, Baby Boomers topped the list! A whopping 75% of them have ramped up their recycling efforts, proving that age doesn’t dictate one’s commitment to saving the planet. It seems like wisdom and experience come with a greater sense of responsibility.

Traditionalists and Gen X aren’t far behind either. Approximately 74% of both groups have also increased their recycling activities. This is quite a contrast compared to Gen Z, where only around 33% reported actively recycling, while millennials clocked in slightly higher at 35%.

Interestingly, the older generations are also taking steps to enhance their homes’ eco-friendliness. Nearly 20% mentioned they’ve implemented measures such as installing solar panels to reduce their carbon footprint. Now that’s impressive!

As we collectively aim to slash emissions by 2050, it’s clear there’s still so much to learn from every generation. Solar power, in particular, continues to gain traction as a viable solution for reducing our reliance on fossil fuels.
