Million tonnes of Ethylene Plant Three Compressor Units Put into Production in Shenyang

On March 16, 2008, Shenyang Blower (Group) Co., Ltd. officially launched a three-compressor unit for an ethylene plant with an annual output of one million tons. This marked a significant milestone in the domestic production of large-scale compressor systems in China. The successful development of these units filled a critical gap in the market and broke the long-standing foreign technology monopoly, showcasing China's growing capability in advanced industrial equipment. Huang Wei, deputy director of the National Technology Development and Reform Commission’s Major Technical Equipment Office, emphasized during his speech that this project is a key achievement in the localization of major technical equipment in China. He praised the company for its meticulous design, careful craftsmanship, and commitment to safety, ensuring that the products meet international standards. In April 2007, Shenyang Blower signed a commercial contract with Sinopec Tianjin Petrochemical Company for the development of a cracking gas compressor unit. In May of the same year, it also signed a deal with Sinopec Zhenhai Refinery Branch for a propylene compressor unit. Later that year, the group entered into an agreement with PetroChina Fushun Petrochemical Company for ethylene compressors. This enabled Shenyang Blower to take on the task of localizing the “three machines” — cracker compressors, propylene compressors, and ethylene compressors — for one-million-ton ethylene plants. After successfully developing the units, Shenyang Blower became the fourth global company capable of producing large-scale compressor systems for ethylene plants, following industry giants like GE and Siemens. Among the two major ethylene projects undertaken by Shenyang Blower, the Tianjin Petrochemical Ethylene Project involved a total investment of 27 billion yuan and an annual output value of 20 billion yuan. The Zhenhai Refining & Chemicals Ethylene Project had a total investment of 31.8 billion yuan and an annual output value of 50 billion yuan. The core equipment for both projects, including the cracking gas compressor and the propylene refrigeration compressor, was designed and manufactured by Shenyang Blower. At a mobilization meeting attended by 4,000 employees, Yan Yongbin, chief engineer of the China Machinery Industry Federation, stated that eight out of the 16 major technical equipment items prioritized by the country will rely on Shenyang Blower’s products. The one-million-ton ethylene plant is just one part of their broader mission. In the future, the company will also be responsible for the first localized nuclear main pumps and key non-nuclear-grade pumps for large-scale nuclear power plants, as well as reciprocating compressors with 120-ton piston thrust for coal chemical projects. The goal is to work closely with CNPC and Sinopec to create world-class products and contribute to the advancement of China’s major technical equipment industry. Currently, Shenyang Blower Group has the capacity to design and manufacture large-scale, locally produced equipment, including centrifugal compressors for ethylene plants with annual outputs exceeding one million tons, centrifugal compressors for kerosene plants with capacities between 5 to 10 million tons, pumps for pumped storage hydroelectric units with capacities of 600,000 to 700,000 kW, high-pressure boiler feed pumps for 1,000MW thermal power units, main pumps for 1,000MW nuclear power plants, and aviation wind tunnel test compressors. Ethylene is the cornerstone of the petrochemical industry. The scale and quality of ethylene production reflect the level of development of a country’s petrochemical sector. A large ethylene facility can drive downstream industries with a growth coefficient of approximately 1:50. An ethylene plant with an annual output of one million tons can stimulate over 100 billion yuan in downstream investments, fostering the rise of numerous industrial clusters. With its long industrial chain, ethylene influences sectors such as textiles, automotive, electronics, construction materials, plastics, and chemicals, promoting continuous industrial upgrades and providing strong support for regional and national economic development. In ethylene plants, the cracking gas compressor, propylene refrigeration compressor, and ethylene compressor are collectively known as the "ethylene triples," as they are at the heart of the production process.
