Million tonnes of Ethylene Plant Three Compressor Units Put into Production in Shenyang

On March 16, 2008, Shenyang Blower (Group) Co., Ltd. officially launched a three-compressor unit system designed for an ethylene plant with an annual output of one million tons. This marked another significant milestone in the localization of large-scale compressor technology in China. The successful development of these units filled a critical domestic gap and broke the long-standing foreign technological monopoly in this key sector. Huang Wei, Deputy Director of the Major Technical Equipment Office at the National Development and Reform Commission, emphasized during his speech that the commissioning of this advanced equipment was a landmark achievement in China’s effort to develop major technical machinery domestically. He praised the company for its meticulous design, careful craftsmanship, and strict safety standards, ensuring that the products met international quality benchmarks. In April 2007, Shenyang Blower signed a commercial contract with Sinopec Tianjin Petrochemical Company for the development of a cracking gas compressor unit. In May of the same year, it also signed a deal with Sinopec Zhenhai Refinery Branch for a propylene compressor unit. Later that year, the company entered into an agreement with PetroChina Fushun Petrochemical Company for the development of an ethylene compressor unit. With these contracts, Shenyang Blower became responsible for the localization of the “three machines” — cracking gas compressors, propylene compressors, and ethylene compressors — for a one-million-ton ethylene plant. After the successful completion of the project, the company joined an elite group of only four global firms capable of producing large-scale ethylene compressor systems, alongside industry giants like GE and Siemens. Among the two major ethylene projects undertaken by Shenyang Blower, the Tianjin Petrochemical Ethylene Project had a total investment of 27 billion yuan and an annual production value of 20 billion yuan. The Zhenhai Refining & Chemicals Ethylene Project, on the other hand, involved a 31.8 billion yuan investment and generated an annual output value of 50 billion yuan. The core equipment, including the cracking gas compressor and propylene refrigeration compressor, were entirely designed and manufactured by Shenyang Blower. Yan Yongbin, Chief Engineer of the China Machinery Industry Federation, highlighted at a meeting attended by 4,000 employees that eight out of 16 key national technical equipment projects would rely on Shenyang Blower's products. The one-million-ton ethylene plant was just one of the three compressor units the company developed. Looking ahead, Shenyang Blower will also take on responsibilities for the localization of nuclear main pumps, non-nuclear-grade pumps for large-scale nuclear power plants, and high-thrust reciprocating compressors for coal chemical industries. The company is expected to work closely with CNPC and Sinopec to produce world-class equipment and contribute significantly to China’s advancement in major technical equipment manufacturing. Currently, Shenyang Blower Group has the capability to design and manufacture large-scale, localized equipment, including centrifugal compressors for ethylene plants with an annual output of over one million tons, centrifugal compressors for kerosene plants with capacities of 5 to 10 million tons, pumps for 600,000 to 700,000 kW pumped storage hydro units, high-pressure boiler feed pumps for 1,000 MW thermal power units, main pumps for 1,000 MW nuclear power plants, and aviation wind tunnel test compressors. Ethylene is a cornerstone of the petrochemical industry, and its production capacity and quality reflect the level of development of a country’s petrochemical sector. A large ethylene plant can drive downstream industries with a growth coefficient of about 1:50. The launch of a one-million-ton ethylene base can stimulate over 100 billion yuan in downstream industry investment, promoting the rise of numerous industrial clusters. Additionally, ethylene's long industrial chain influences sectors such as textiles, automotive, electronics, construction materials, plastics, and chemicals, driving continuous industrial optimization and economic growth. In ethylene plants, the cracking gas compressor, propylene refrigeration compressor, and ethylene compressor are collectively known as the "ethylene triples," as they form the heart of the production process.
