In the metallurgical industry, steel pipe cutting is typically performed using flying saws. The standard running speed of steel pipes is around 60 meters per minute. However, with the increasing demand for faster production, ultra-high-speed flying saws have been developed to meet these needs. This article discusses an ultra-high-speed flying saw equipped with a numerical control (NC) system that enables dynamic tracking. It also explains how to select appropriate servo units and motors based on production requirements.
The goal is to provide insights that other professionals in this field can learn from. First, it's essential to understand the production parameters. For instance, if the steel pipe runs at a speed of 180 meters per minute, and the flying saw is set to complete a round trip within 2 seconds, the system must be designed accordingly.
As shown in Figure 1, the acceleration time is 0.2 seconds. Once the saw reaches a constant speed of 3 m/s, it maintains that speed for 0.6 seconds before decelerating. From the graph, we can calculate the acceleration as follows:
a = v/t = 3 / 0.2 = 15 m/s².
This means the control system and servo motor must be capable of handling such high acceleration.
At a speed of 3 m/s, a standard ball screw may not be sufficient. Therefore, a German WH80 linear motion unit is used instead. Next, we consider the selection of the servo motor torque. The total torque required is calculated as:
Ma = Mload + Mtrans + Mrol + Mlide
Where:
- Mload = Load torque
- Mtrans = Torque for linear motion
- Mrol = Rotational acceleration torque
- Mlide = No-load torque
Using the given values:
- Mload = (100 × 9.8 × 0.1 × 63.66) / 2000 = 3.1 N·m
- Mtrans = (100 × 15 × 63.66) / 2000 = 48 N·m
- Mrol = 0.23 N·m
- Mlide = 3.6 N·m
Total torque Ma = 3.1 + 48 + 0.23 + 3.6 = 54.93 N·m
Considering continuous operation, the final torque required is M = 54.93 / 0.7 ≈ 78.5 N·m.
The linear motion unit is driven by a servo motor through a gear. With a travel distance of 200 mm/rev, to achieve a speed of 3 m/s, the motor must rotate at 900 m/min. After applying a 1:3 reduction ratio, the final motor torque becomes approximately 26.9 N·m, and the motor speed should reach 2700 rpm.
Based on these calculations, a more cost-effective motor with sufficient torque and power can be selected. In practice, the NC system used is the NUM1020T, as shown in Figure 2, which provides a machine tool connection diagram.
Additionally, as long as the relevant parameters, including synchronization functions, are properly configured and the PLC and machining program are well written, the desired performance can be easily achieved. This approach ensures efficiency, accuracy, and reliability in high-speed steel pipe cutting applications.
