The main oil gallery will be short of oil, the engine will lose lubrication, and the friction surface will be burned due to no lubricating oil, especially the main bearings and connecting rod bearings. In this case, the bearing alloy will be lost due to the large amount of heat generated by the friction, and it will even sinter together with the journal and eventually stop the engine from working.

In order to avoid these undesirable phenomena, a bypass valve, ie, a safety valve, is provided in parallel with the rough filter in a section of the oil passage from the oil pump to the main oil passage. When the oil pressure difference between the oil inlet and outlet of the coarse filter exceeds the specified value, the bypass valve is pushed open, so that the oil flows directly into the main oil passage without passing through the coarse filter to ensure normal lubrication of various parts of the engine. Lubrication is the main factor at this time, and filtration is secondary. Although the engine oil entering the main oil gallery is not filtered and dirty, the engine will not suffer from dry friction due to lack of lubrication, causing serious problems.
