On November 2nd, news emerged from the Shunyi District Municipal Administration Committee in Beijing. As the host of the 2008 Olympic water sports events, Shunyi has taken significant steps to improve environmental quality by completing three large-scale central heating centers in the eastern, western, and southern parts of the district. These facilities are now operational and were introduced for the 2007 winter heating season. The project covers a total of 7 million square meters, accounting for 85% of the district's heating area. By replacing 76 residential boiler rooms, the soot emission rate has dropped below 10 milligrams per cubic meter, marking Shunyi as one of the cleanest coal-fired heating areas in China and globally.
Previously, Shunyi relied on 76 district boiler rooms and 165 coal-fired boilers scattered throughout the city. These systems were inefficient, energy-intensive, and lacked proper sulfur removal, leading to serious environmental pollution. Since May 2006, the district has invested 1 billion yuan to build three modern heating centers in Chengdong, Chengxi, and Chengnan. These centers use advanced computerized control systems for coal transportation, combustion adjustment, desulfurization, dust removal, slag handling, and temperature and pressure regulation. This ensures more stable operation and efficient energy use.
Environmental protection measures include state-of-the-art bag-type dust collection and wet desulfurization technology. According to real-time measurements, soot emissions have been reduced to under 10 mg per cubic meter, setting a new benchmark for coal-based heating and dust control. The shift to centralized heating is expected to save 51,500 tons of coal annually, reduce 945 tons of ash, cut dust emissions by 9,649 tons, and lower sulfur dioxide emissions by over 1,076 tons. Noise levels will also decrease significantly, leading to a marked improvement in winter air quality, with more days meeting or exceeding the second-level standard.
Currently, the three major heating centers are undergoing water testing to ensure timely heating services starting in November. This initiative represents a major step forward in Shunyi’s efforts to balance urban development with environmental sustainability.
