The official launch of China's first community seawater-source air conditioning project took place in Tangdao Bay, within the Qingdao Economic and Technological Development Zone. This milestone marks a significant breakthrough in the development of civilian seawater-based air conditioning systems, showcasing Qingdao’s leadership in the scientific and sustainable utilization of marine resources nationwide.
The project was completed in the Millennium Dragon Garden residential area, part of the Qingdao Development Zone. With a total investment of 20 million yuan and covering 65,000 square meters of construction area, it is expected to become the largest residential seawater air conditioning system in the country. Currently, the first phase—covering 7,000 square meters of community clubs and kindergartens—has already been equipped with seawater air conditioning for heating.
As part of a collaborative effort, Qingdao Ever Source Technology Co., Ltd. is responsible for the project. According to the company’s representative, the seawater air conditioning technology relies on extracting energy from seawater through heat pumps for both heating and cooling. The system consists of three main components: an energy extraction system, an energy upgrading system, and an energy release system. The process begins by using heat transfer equipment to extract heat from seawater, which is then upgraded via a heat pump to reach the desired temperature. Finally, the energy is released into the environment to provide comfortable indoor temperatures, effectively achieving both heating and cooling functions.
According to Zhao, an official from the Qingdao Development Zone Development and Reform Bureau, the system offers substantial energy efficiency benefits. For every 1 kWh of electricity consumed, the system can produce 5.6 kW of cooling capacity and 4 kW of heating capacity. Compared to traditional air conditioning systems, this technology can save between 40% and 50% in energy use. Investors estimate that once fully operational, the seawater air conditioning system at the Millennium Dragon Garden will not only be more cost-effective than conventional heating methods but also provide residents with consistent indoor temperatures and year-round hot water supply.
