The robotics industry in China is rapidly developing. According to the statistics of the World Robot Federation (IFR), in 2000, only 930 industrial robots were used in China. By 2011, the number of robots had increased to 74.371 million units, and by 2013 it had increased to 121,200.
According to South Korea’s “Korean Daily†website reported on September 7, China’s number of robots operating in 2013 ranked fifth in Japan, North America, Germany, and South Korea, but it is expected that by 2016, it will surpass South Korea and Germany to become the third largest in the world. The annual sales of industrial robots have become the largest in the world in 2013. In 2013, the number of industrial robots sold in China was 36.56 million, accounting for 20% of the world market. The number of robots produced in China is expected to also occupy the first place in the world in the near future. However, IFR expects that by 2016 China will produce more than 38,000 units, making it the world’s largest robot production base. And 90% of the Chinese production market is occupied by foreign companies such as Europe and Japan.
In a report on robots in a Chinese media, a background analysis of the rapid development of the robot industry stated that “rapidly rising wage levels, the reduction of rural surplus labor force, and the reduction of the economically active population are important reasons.†The average annual salary of Chinese manufacturing practitioners has increased from RMB 16,443 in 2008 to RMB 32,053 in 2013, which has nearly doubled in five years.
