Since last year, beneath the surface calm of the commercial vehicle market, major light passenger manufacturers have been quietly advancing their development of National IV models, aiming to seize market opportunities with the upcoming implementation of the emission standard. Recently, Jiangling announced that its newly launched Ford New Generation Transit has received China's first light passenger National IV certificate, marking it as the "First Light Passenger under National IV Standard in China."
The arrival of the Ford New Generation Transit as the "National IV Light Car First Vehicle" signals that "green protection" will become a mainstream trend in the future of the light passenger market. Iveco, a European brand, currently only meets the National III standards with its Turin V model. According to reports, Iveco plans to launch a National IV-compliant model in April, but the exact release date is still uncertain. Meanwhile, Japanese brands like Gold Cup and South East Delika lack follow-up models and have not yet announced any National IV product plans.
Starting from January 1, 2008, Beijing implemented the National IV fuel standard, and new passenger vehicles must meet the National IV emissions requirements. Vehicles failing to comply will be restricted from entering the market. Nationally, the adoption of National IV is inevitable, and the time for full implementation is approaching. Will the light passenger and commercial vehicle sectors keep up with the National IV timeline?
As environmental concerns rise, terms like State III emissions, National IV standards, fuel tax, high oil prices, and OBD have become key topics in the automotive industry. In the context of the Olympic Games, energy conservation and emission reduction are reshaping traditional vehicle models, and the light passenger market is no exception. With each emission standard upgrade, the market undergoes another round of transformation. Among these changes, the "European Army"—brands like Ford Transit focusing on premium light passenger models—has emerged as a leading force.
Meeting National IV standards requires significant technical upgrades, and currently, only the new Ford Transit has achieved this. Under government policy guidance, consumer preferences are also shifting. Rapid urban economic growth, high oil prices, and the full enforcement of National III standards have driven the second peak in light passenger purchases. In the 1990s, the first peak was driven by price sensitivity, while the current demand focuses on high-quality models with strong power, low fuel consumption, and better emissions. National IV models, which exceed industry standards, are now gaining popularity and are expected to dominate the market.
Currently, many buyers still opt for National III models due to supply limitations, but for those looking for long-term value or luxury models, the National IV option offers greater benefits. Industry experts believe that as environmental policies become stricter, National III models may face more restrictions, such as road access bans and stricter inspections. Buying a National IV model now can avoid future complications and provide better performance and resale value.
Consumer interest in National IV light passengers is growing. Mr. Ma, a Beijing resident, said: “The National IV features of the Ford New Generation Transit are very appealing. While National III models are cheaper now, I believe buying a National IV model is more reliable in the long run. It will offer advantages in road access, inspections, and depreciation, and the power is better than other National III models. The design is also more refined, which helps improve the company’s image.â€
The push for green protection in light passenger vehicles is already a clear trend. On one hand, we should support the country’s efforts to improve the environment. On the other hand, individuals should embrace eco-friendly concepts and choose high-emission-standard models. Ford’s achievement in securing the first National IV license shows that the shift toward greener transportation has begun. In the future, more light passenger manufacturers are likely to join the National IV movement.
