Keppel Far East launches new drilling ship design

Recently, Singapore rig builder Keppel Fels has launched a new rig design designed to build and deliver the next generation of deep water with a 20,000 psi blowout preventer with its Korean competitors. The drilling unit is superior.
The 2010 BP Macondo accident sparked a race to develop a drilling ship with a 20,000 psi blowout preventer. Previous drilling contractors have been retrofitting floating units equipped with 15,000 psi blowout preventers to cope with the need to process more mud while drilling subsea wells at higher reservoir pressures.
This practice is about to change, and oil giants such as BP and Shell have announced plans to develop their 20,000 psi BOP ultra-deepwater drilling units. The two companies have teamed up with Maersk Drilling and Transocean Drilling to develop new semi-submersible drilling rigs and drilling ship designs.
In order not to be overtaken by these Korean shipyards, Keppel Far East officially introduced its “Can Do 20K psi” drilling ship at the 2013 Pareto Securities Offshore Oil and Gas Conference held in Oslo earlier this month.
Wong Kok Seng, general manager of Keppel Far East, said that the most advanced drilling vessels currently in operation are designed and built for exploration drilling. Keppel Far East has been asked to renovate and upgrade Ensco's DS-6 drilling vessel. It is understood that the contract between the ultra deep water plant and BP will include the development of drilling work.
