Lishui City in Zhejiang Province has made significant progress in the research and development of Yi (She) ethnic medicine. Over a three-year period, a dedicated task force conducted extensive fieldwork to document, organize, and preserve traditional medical knowledge of the Yi people. This initiative not only revealed the current status of folk medicine among the She nationality but also led to the creation of a specialized software system to establish a comprehensive "Yi Medicine Research and Development Database." This database serves as a crucial foundation for future studies and provides essential scientific support for the preservation and promotion of Yi medical heritage.
By the end of 2007, the project was officially evaluated and accepted by a panel of experts. They recognized it as the first nationwide effort to systematically survey and collect folk medical practices of the She people, filling a major gap in domestic research and setting a new benchmark in the field.
Lishui is home to one of the largest concentrations of the Yi population in China. In 2007, Dong medicine was officially designated as a provincial intangible cultural heritage by the Zhejiang government, highlighting its cultural and medicinal significance. The city had already initiated a research and development project on Yi medicine in 2005, forming a multidisciplinary team of over 20 members, including doctors, pharmacists, local cultural workers, and health officials.
The research team conducted in-depth interviews with more than 200 renowned She doctors and their descendants, collecting a wealth of information: 776 disease types, 1,600 prescriptions, and 2,952 varieties of traditional herbal medicines used for diagnosis and treatment. All this data was digitized and analyzed, leading to the establishment of the first specialized database for the study and development of Yi medicine.
In addition, the team compiled detailed records of diagnostic theories, commonly used terminology, therapeutic methods, folk prescriptions, and medicinal characteristics. Seven key prescriptions were selected for clinical testing, one of which was approved for hospital preparation. Two herbal tea products—Jianwei Tea and Lipid-Lowering Tea—were developed using peony-based ingredients. A peony medicine underwent pharmacological and toxicological testing, and the "11 Ingredients for Beverage Preparation of Miso" was approved by the Zhejiang Food and Drug Administration and included in the "Zhejiang Infusion Standards for Chinese Medicines."
These achievements laid a solid groundwork for the future development of traditional Yi medicine. The group also published 23 research papers and authored the comprehensive book "Chinese She Nationality Pharmaceutics," which is currently the most complete professional reference on Yi medicine in China. This work represents a milestone in preserving and promoting the rich medical heritage of the Yi people.
