A groundbreaking horizontal off-grid wind turbine, developed jointly by the Guangzhou Institute of Energy Research under the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Guangzhou Zhongke Hengyuan Energy Technology Co., Ltd., has recently passed a technical review organized by the Guangdong Department of Science and Technology. When asked by the China Institute of Science and Technology Information, the project was confirmed to be the first of its kind globally.
The Guangzhou Institute of Energy Research is the only research institution in China focused on the comprehensive development of new and renewable energy technologies. This fully permanent magnet suspension wind turbine, which uses permanent magnets without a traditional control system, is entirely designed and manufactured in China. Its successful development marks a significant technological breakthrough in both China and the global wind power industry.
According to inspections conducted by relevant authorities, the installation of full permanent magnet suspension bearings can increase the generator's output power by more than 20%. This means that, under the same wind speed conditions, the all-permanent magnet suspension wind turbine can generate 20% more electricity.
Li Guokun, the chief scientist of the project, explained that the most notable feature of this type of wind turbine is its ability to start with light winds and generate power from gentle breezes. Its starting wind speed is as low as 1.5 m/s, significantly lower than the 3.5 m/s required by traditional turbines.
For example, in Gansu Province, only 7% of the area currently meets the 3.5 m/s starting wind speed requirement. However, over 70% of the region has wind speeds of 1.5 m/s or higher—an increase of nearly ten times. With China’s vast wind energy resources covering about 8% of the country, and usable areas accounting for 50%, experts from the appraisal panel believe that this low-wind-speed startup technology could greatly enhance the utilization of wind resources in large parts of China and extend the annual power generation time of wind turbines.
This innovation not only improves efficiency but also expands the potential for wind energy use in regions previously considered unsuitable, marking a major step forward in sustainable energy solutions.
