On March 20th, the implementation plan for the second topic of the National "863" Program's Key Project—High-ash-melting-point Coal Pressure Gasification Technology Development and Industrial Demonstration—received approval from the Ministry of Science and Technology and the Shandong Provincial Department of Science and Technology. The plan was reviewed by a panel of nine experts from renowned institutions such as the China Petroleum and Chemical Industry Planning Institute, the Coal Science General Institute, and the Shanxi Coal Chemical Institute of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
The expert group carefully examined the submitted reports and took into account the current state of the coal gasification industry in China, as well as the specific characteristics of domestic coal quality. After thorough deliberation, they unanimously agreed that the project, backed by demonstration initiatives and led by enterprises, demonstrated a clear division of responsibilities and established an effective production-academia-research collaboration model. This approach is expected to significantly enhance the project’s implementation and future promotion. The team also affirmed that the implementation plan is highly feasible and well-structured.
According to the report, once this technology is successfully industrialized, it will play a vital role in promoting the efficient and clean utilization of high-ash-melting-point coal, which constitutes about 50% of China’s total coal reserves. This development could help address energy challenges while reducing environmental impact.
It is also reported that the pilot work of this project will continue at Yankuang Lunan Fertilizer Plant, serving as a key testing ground for the technology’s practical application and scalability. The successful execution of this project is expected to set a benchmark for similar technologies across the country, further advancing China’s energy innovation and sustainability goals.
